The Ranking Sheet Was Posted Upside Down
By 塩むすび
📰 Rumor: The Head Student Will Break a Plate During This Year's Upside-Down Week
The first of the sheets posted in the old rampart gallery this morning. The seven days when the head student waits tables are something the half-basement students have been waiting a whole year for.
📰 Rumor: This Is the Last Year of Upside-Down Week
A second-year ranked A has apparently been in and out of the instructors' office. Word is she called it a bad habit that coddles the lower ranks, loudly enough for the whole gallery to hear.
📰 Rumor: A Line of Merit Changes How the Adjudicators Look at You
Do the adjudicators of the ranking duels actually read the line added to the ranking sheet at the start of the week? Some say they do. Others laugh and call it decoration.
Whatever the rumors say, Upside-Down Week at Grenzahl Academy of Magic is starting again this year. For seven days in autumn, timed to the harbor carnival, the ranking sheet is taken down and posted upside down. Students ranked E and D take the private rooms on the top floor of the east wing and the upper tier of seats in the dining hall, while S and A move into the four-bed rooms in the half-basement and wait tables. Those who wait tables may not refuse a request from those placed above them. For seven days, the punishment for private fights is doubled, and on the final night the academy takes charge of guarding the harbor's masked procession.
Live through the seven days of Upside-Down Week and be there when the ranking sheet is posted at the start of the next.
Whether you go after a line of merit, keep your head down and ride it out, or keep your true self hidden the whole way is up to you.
🎭 Three People in Seven Days Where Top and Bottom Trade Places
Wilhelmine Trausen / 18 / Third year / Rank S, head student of the academy
She performs table service more perfectly than anyone and does not move an eyebrow at any request. She carries the silver tray she brought from home level in one hand and sets plates down without a sound. Only when clearing your plate does she add one remark she did not need to say.
Hartrude Winke / 17 / Second year / Rank E, head of the half-basement room
Even handed the key to a top-floor private room, she says she cannot settle there and goes back down to the half-basement at night. A dockworker's daughter, blunt in her manner, yet she tells anyone who moves down which beds are good and which are bad before they can ask. What she thinks every time Upside-Down Week comes around, she only tells people she has chosen.
Lieschen Polster / 16 / First year / Rank B, assistant to the recorder
She writes everyone's deeds in the same format and the same size of handwriting. She goes around taking statements in rapid, polite speech, waits until the other person has finished, then asks exactly three questions. Before she writes your record, she comes to read it aloud to you and check it.
🗝 How to Play
A single-chapter sandbox. It begins on the morning of the first day of Upside-Down Week, runs through a life with top and bottom reversed and the masked procession on the seventh day, and ends when the ranking sheet is posted at the start of the next week. Who you ask for what, whose requests you grant, and how much of your power you show on the night of the guard duty are yours to decide every time. How the three treat you depends on your rank and on whether they have noticed the power you are hiding. There is no affection score. You can tell by what they call you, and by which tier you end up sitting on in the dining hall.
✍ What to Put in Your Persona
- Your rank (S through E. During Upside-Down Week it is read in reverse. You can also be a transfer student whose rank is not yet set)
- Your discipline and the magic you are best at (heat, fluid, air, mineral, light, mind)
- Your aim for Upside-Down Week (earn merit, stay unnoticed, hide your true self). Both your aim and how you act on the night of the guard duty affect the outcome
- Your starting relationship with each of the three (same half-basement room, same class, know them only by name)
- What you are hiding (your real power or your past)
If you write nothing, you can start from one of three options: a first-year ranked E sitting on the upper tier for the first time, a third-year ranked S waiting tables, or a transfer student with no rank yet, working as a recorder.
