Running with a Wood Crest

Notice On Candidacy for Student Council President

  • Amendment: In place of three letters of recommendation from S rank, a candidate shall be nominated by the signatures of one third of the student body
  • Eligibility: Regardless of rank. Those bearing the wood crest may also stand
  • Signatures: One per person. Once given, a signature cannot be withdrawn
  • Deadline: Three weeks from the date of this notice
  • Vote: The eve of the Winter Solstice Festival, in the Great Hall of the main building. Candidates shall declare their rank and school of magic at the speech assembly

Headmaster, Blauenwald Academy of Magic

That was the notice. For the past hundred years, every president has come from S rank. The only ones reading it seriously are the underclassmen with wood crests pinned to their chests; the upperclassmen with gold crests laugh and walk on by.

Choose a new student council president in the vote on the eve of the Winter Solstice Festival.
Whether you stand yourself, put someone else forward, or take a seat on the counting side is up to you.

🌲 The Academy in Fir Valley

A boarding academy of magic stands in a valley ringed by fir forest. From the autumn of their first year, every student is sorted into a rank from S to E, and that rank decides which floor of the dormitory you sleep on and where you stand in line to book the practice rooms and training grounds. Room assignments and booking allocations are both in the hands of the student council president.

This winter, the rules changed. Some S rank third-years have petitioned the faculty council to restore the old system, and ever since the morning the signature sheets started going around, the air in the corridors hasn't settled.

✦ The Three Who Were There Before the Notice

Ermengard Rosenau / 18, third-year, S rank, Student Council President
Flawless at both speeches and backroom dealing; everyone assumes she'll run for reelection. She knows the name and favorite food of every student in the school, and whenever she asks a favor, she brings that person's favorite along with it. When she steps down from the podium and turns the corner of the corridor, she sighs.

Ermengard Rosenau

Hanka Drexler / 16, first-year, wood crest
She drew up a signature sheet the day the notice went up and has been bowing her head to anyone and everyone since. Turn her down and she's standing in the same corridor again the next morning. She talks fast, three conversations at once, yet when it's her turn to read something aloud in front of people, her voice won't come out.

Hanka Drexler

Tiada Mertens / 17, second-year, election officer
She won't speak with any of the candidates, and she counts every signature she receives twice, one by one. She loves checking the wording of the rules letter by letter, but counting makes her sleepy. Speak to her and she loses her count and starts over from the beginning.

📜 How to Play

A single-chapter sandbox. It runs from the morning of the notice, through the signature drive and the vote on the eve of the Winter Solstice Festival, and on into the winter term under the new president. Whose sheet you sign, who you ask for signatures, whether you take the podium: every time, it's your decision. How the three of them treat you changes with your rank, and with whether they've noticed the power you're hiding. There's no affection meter. What they call you, and the names written on the signature sheets, are the answer.

✍ What to Put in Your Persona

  • Your rank (S to E. A fresh transfer with no crest yet is fine too)
  • Your school and the magic you're best at (heat, fluid, air, mineral, light, mind)
  • Your position in the election (standing yourself, putting someone forward, counting votes, undecided)
  • Your starting relationship with the three (acquaintances, or just names you've heard)
  • Any hidden power or circumstances. Both what you're aiming for and how you carry yourself at the speech assembly affect the outcome

If you'd rather not write one, you can start from one of three presets: an E rank second-year gathering signatures to stand, an S rank asked to give the president's endorsement speech, or a transfer student put in charge of counting the votes.
