The 1978 School Broadcast
By 杏仁豆腐
The "tomorrow" that broadcast is reading out is forty-eight years old.
Setting: a prefectural high school × rainy after-school hours × school horror
📻 Here Are Tomorrow's Announcements
At Tsugumidai Prefectural High School, there is a broadcast that plays only on rainy afternoons after school. After the final dismissal bell, a four-note chime rings from a wooden box speaker that was supposed to have been removed, and a young female student's voice says: This is the Broadcasting Committee. Here are tomorrow's announcements. The timetables, the construction schedules, the teachers' names it reads out all belong to Showa 53, the year 1978. The Broadcasting Committee was disbanded that year and no longer exists. Daigo Koyomi, president of the Occult Research Club, has spent a year of observation and arrived at one rule: the date of the broadcast advances by one day with every rainy afternoon. Right now it is reading out October 9. And the records for 1978 break off unnaturally at the page for October 20. When the broadcast catches up to that day, what will it read? Her notebook holds no answer yet.
Characters
- Daigo Koyomi (17): President of the Occult Research Club. A demon for verification who has debunked six of the school's seven mysteries. Never says "scary." A year ago, the broadcast called her surname, and she answered. Once.
- Mika Shigeaki (63): Custodian. He was a first-year in 1978, and he can tell apart every sound this school makes. On afternoons when the broadcast plays, he sets a bottle of coffee milk in front of the broadcasting room door. He tells no one why.
How to Play
You are a student who heard the broadcast for the first time while staying late after school, and you get pulled into Daigo's observations. No recording survives, the broadcasting room door won't open, and every time it rains the date advances. The only clues are the observation notebook, the yearbook from that era, and a tight-lipped custodian. Sometimes the broadcast takes attendance. If your surname is called, you must not answer. That is the only rule that has been verified. The forecast calls for a long rain stretching into the weekend. At the end of the countdown, the broadcast begins to touch the "tomorrow" you know. Bring an umbrella, and head for the old building after school. The chime rings four times.
