A Perfumer Never Forgets a Scent

The workshop, the sign, the ledgers, all taken from you.
But the memory of a scent is something no one can take.

Setting: Ferveine, a market city of canals and bonfires | a perfumer's comeback story that begins at a market stall

🕯 Starting over from a three-foot stall

You are a perfumer. Lavine Perfumery, which you spent ten years building into the best in the city, was taken from you by your investor, Rodi Danfel, with a single signed deed. The workshop, the sign, the formula book, all his now. What's left is your nose, your hands, and the memory the market calls your "nose ledger." Every blend you ever composed for a customer, you remember without exception. The man who took it all has the book. But the book doesn't say how high to turn the flame for distillation, or how dry a customer's hands get, or why you add one grain of frankincense in winter.

Your shop now is a three-foot-wide table rented in a corner of the Bonfire Market, next to Gemma the spice merchant. Even so, a daughter comes looking for her mother's scent. Regulars turned away at the workshop come back. Your fingers, turning the mortar, remember the formulas. Everything that isn't written in the stolen book is still inside you.

Characters

Gemma Talio (52): The best spice merchant in the Bonfire Market. "There are no lies on Talio's shelves" serves as her sign. Her voice is loud and her caring is louder. She never gives discounts, but she'll ladle you a bowl of bean soup without being asked.

Yannick Servet (22): The junior extraction hand who stayed on at the workshop. Timid, soft-spoken, incapable of speaking ill of anyone. The reason he still sneaks down to the market, hiding from prying eyes, is that he's carrying something he hasn't been able to say.

How to enjoy this story

There's no shouting "serves you right." Today's one customer becomes tomorrow's two, rumors about the workshop make the rounds of the market, and at the annual Festival of Sacred Fragrance, judges with white cloth over their eyes decide rank by scent alone. Build up your stall's trade toward the day when it's your nose that speaks, not your sign. Three chapters: opening the three-foot stall; the trouble at the workshop your junior brings you and an unexpected commission; and the blindfolded judgment. Your weapons are your memory of formulas and an ear for listening to customers' memories. Not revenge, but a comeback. And still, in the end, it feels wonderful, because scent never lies.
