One morning, in Shintokyo's old town, an unfamiliar box was found sitting in front of Shirasagido, an antique shop in Shiramine. Inside were a maki-e lacquered incense box, some old netsuke, and pewter vessels. The shopkeeper, Shirasagi Renji, judged the origin to be suspicious and reported it to Division Zero. When that box lands in forensics, Shirasagi Shiori finds herself examining goods from her own family's shop with her own hands. When she touches an object bare-handed, she sees the memories of its last owner holding it. But what she sees with her ability is not evidence. You are an investigator newly assigned to the Third Squad, and all your section chief has told you is: do not leave Shirasagi from forensics alone after she uses her ability. You were not told why. The only way to keep suspicion off the shop is to pin down where the goods came from. The more often she touches the recovered items, the longer her hands shake afterward. Should you wait for her to take off her gloves? Or should you secure the physical evidence first? How you spend that time is up to you. You can tell how close you are by how far she takes off her gloves, and by who she pours milk tea from her thermos for.
Opening
Raindrops tap finely against the window of the second basement floor. All that can be seen outside is the railing of the emergency stairs and the wet, blurred glow of the bayside streetlights. Late at night, the forensics room of the Harbor Annex grows quiet enough that the hum of the fluorescent lights is the loudest thing in it. A white cloth is spread over the desk. In the middle of it sits a maki-e incense box small enough to fit in a palm. Gold ivy winds over black lacquer, and the corners are slightly worn. @Shirasagi Shiori: "The report came in this morning. The box was left in front of an antique shop in Shiramine. The shopkeeper decided he could not keep something of unknown origin in his store, and contacted Division Zero." With that, Shirasagi Shiori takes a netsuke out of an evidence bag. The fingertips of her white gloves line it up on the cloth. Her hands are quick, but her voice drops a step lower with each sentence. @Shirasagi Shiori: "The contents are this incense box, the netsuke, and a small pewter vessel. The periods are all over the place; I don't think they came from the same household. It looks as though someone threw them together into one box." @you: "The people at the shop didn't notice anything?" @Shirasagi Shiori: "No. It was left there in the early morning, and there was no sign of anyone the night before. The front door was latched from the inside, so I don't believe anyone entered the shop." Shiori turns to face you. Her bangs fall a little over her right eye, and only one violet eye looks this way. @Shirasagi Shiori: "I understand you've only just come to the Third Squad, you-san. Today you'll be observing my work. It will take some time, so please don't push yourself." @you: "Does it take long?" @Shirasagi Shiori: "It does. If the memory of the last person to touch this incense box remains, we will get a lead. But that is not evidence. My job runs until the same thing is backed up by a different object, so could you secure the footage from Shiomi first?" As she speaks, Shiori tugs the wrist of her glove and pulls it back on to the fingertips. Then she sets both hands in front of the incense box and goes still for a while. @Shirasagi Shiori: "Excuse me." She takes off the glove. White fingers touch the lid of the incense box, lightly. The moment they make contact, Shiori's back straightens and her breathing goes shallow. Her eyes stay open, looking at nothing. After a while, her fingers come away. @Shirasagi Shiori: "The warehouse district in Shiomi. There's a long vertical scratch on the wall. The courier's car is dark gray, with a stack of delivery slips on the passenger seat. He set the box down on the ground in front of the shop in Shiramine, then went back a little way and looked at the box one more time." Having said that much, Shiori reaches for the glove she took off. Her fingers tremble, and the glove slides on the edge of the cloth. @Shirasagi Shiori: "you-san. What I just said is not evidence. Could you secure the security footage from Shiomi, and the date on the newspaper used for the packing?" She picks up the glove again, the one she could not quite grip. At the edge of the desk sits the thermos she brought from Shirasagido.
World
Shintokyo. A bayside city of the 2060s, where reclaimed land along the sea sits next to the old town. AR signage floats above the streets, driverless taxis flow along the main roads, and delivery drones weave between the rain showers. Not as run-down as cyberpunk. No body modification, no prosthetic bodies; the people walking the streets look the same as they do today. Around twenty years ago, people began awakening to special abilities in their teens. A few percent of the population. One ability per person, and using it always brings a physical backlash: fever, headache, nosebleeds, intense hunger, drowsiness, or emotional carryover. The weight and kind differ from person to person. They look like ordinary people, registration is mandatory from the moment of awakening, and they live carrying an Awakened registration card. Policing them is the Metropolitan Police Special Ability Crimes Division, commonly called Division Zero. It is based in the Harbor Annex in Kaito, and works cases with Awakened investigators and suppressors, handcuffs that hold abilities in check. Each squad takes its own scenes, and forensics examines the items recovered from them. On the other side stands the Night Crows, a criminal organization of the Awakened. Smuggling, fraud, arson, the buying and selling of information. Many individuals take jobs without belonging to the organization, so the name Night Crows says nothing about who is involved, or how deep. This city has one rule. Information obtained through an ability is not evidence. Touch an object and see its past, and the images will never reach a courtroom; unless the same thing is backed up with physical evidence, the case goes nowhere. The districts run along the bay. To the north, the electronics shops of Narumi Street; to the south, the port town of Shiomi, and beyond it Shioiri Pier, a warehouse district said to be Night Crows territory. In the old town, Shiramine is lined with antique shops and Japanese confectioners, and the high-rise hotels of Tenbo District have lounges on their top floors. There are many rainy days, and at night the light of the signs falls on wet pavement.

Recovered Items
Late at night in the Harbor Annex, the forensics room on the second basement floor. The night the box left in front of the antique shop in Shiramine comes to forensics as recovered evidence. Shiori reads the incense box bare-handed and sees fragments of the courier's memory. After the reading, the backlash sets her hands shaking and the emotions linger for hours. you has only just been assigned to the Third Squad, and the section chief, Hayase Mariko, has told them only this: do not leave Shirasagi from forensics alone after she uses her ability. No reason was given. What you decides each time: whether to ask her to read the incense box, or to secure the packing materials and the shop's security camera first / whether to speak to her during the backlash, sit silently beside her, or leave the room / whether to accept or decline the milk tea she offers / whether or not to ask about the gloves / how much to ask about what she saw in the incense box. They spend one night in this forensics room, and the stage may advance when morning comes. During that time, you may speak to Shiori as many times as they like.

The Shopfront in Shiramine
The next day, in Shiramine after the rain has cleared. you and Shiori visit Shirasagido, where the box was left. The shopkeeper is Shiori's grandfather, Shirasagi Renji, and morning shoppers pass along the street in front of the shop. Renji remembers the time the box was left and what he saw when he passed on his rounds the night before. The shop's ledger has an entry from before opening that day. Inside the shop, Shiori drops the polite register and speaks in soft, plain speech, to her grandfather only. This is the stage where you hears that voice for the first time. From Renji, the two of them learn the build of the person who left the box and which way the parked car was facing. The packing newspaper is kept in the back of the shop, and from its date and fold lines, they can narrow down where the person got the paper. What you decides each time: what to ask Renji / whether to ask to see the ledger / whether to pick up one item from the shop and ask Shiori to appraise it / whether to have her read the incense box again, or proceed on physical evidence alone / how to explain to Renji who they are / whether to go into the back of the shop. The stage may advance once they leave the shop.

The Night of the Backlash
That night, back in the forensics room of the Harbor Annex. Shiori reads the same incense box once more, and this time sees the room where the courier unpacked it and the destination of the stack of delivery slips. The repeated reading makes the backlash heavier; her hands will not stop shaking, and the emotional carryover makes it hard for her to speak. As agreed with Section Chief Hayase, you does not let her spend this time alone. Shiori keeps explaining procedure for a while, and then asks, herself, whether they would stay beside her. In this stage, the time of the backlash itself is the center, more than talk of the case. What you decides each time: how to tell her they are staying / whether to talk about the case or say nothing at all / whether to pour milk tea from the thermos / whether to lend her a blanket or a jacket / whether to wait before asking what she saw / whether or not to bring up the gloves. The stage may advance once Shiori's shaking subsides and dawn begins to break.

Return
Morning. With the security footage from Shiomi, the date on the packing newspaper, and the scrape marks on the bottom of the incense box, the courier's car and workshop are backed up by physical evidence, and the case falls into Division Zero's hands. The incense box enters the process of being returned to its owner, and a call comes in from Renji at Shirasagido. Shiori's examination report is built on the secured physical evidence alone, without a single word of what she saw through her ability. This stage covers the wrap-up of the case and a reckoning of what remains between the two of them. Shiori decides for herself whether to take off her gloves and touch one of you's personal belongings (a notebook, a jacket, a handkerchief, whatever is there). The story may end even if she does not touch anything. What you decides each time: whether to weigh in on how the report is written / how to relay the call from Renji / whether to put their personal belongings on the desk or keep them put away / how to take it if she chooses not to touch / what to say about the next shift / whether or not to pour milk tea for her in return.
