Lost and Found Knows
By 杏仁豆腐
A lost item tells only half of its owner's secret.
Setting: the after-school lost and found window x an everyday school mystery
🔍 The Window in the Old School Shop
In the old school shop of Masano Prefectural High School, there is a lost and found window that opens only after school. As a first-year, you were pushed into what was supposed to be exactly that kind of dead-end post. The mistress of the window, your senpai Kosemura Shiori, can tell a person's dominant hand from the way their umbrella is rolled and read the owner from the knot on a bundle. Then one day, strange "found items" begin to arrive. Things nobody lost: school equipment that supposedly vanished three years ago. No one is ever seen dropping them off, and only carefully maintained items are left in the return box. Around the same time, the student council auditor Kemmotsu Kodai appears at the window, carrying a gap in the ledgers from three years ago. Your senpai wears the face of someone who knows the answer, and waits for you to finish thinking. The auditor only wants to set the books straight, not to punish anyone. And whoever is carrying the items has three years' worth of reasons. Why are things that were never lost coming back now? Today, once again, one more line, one more item name, is added to the window's ledger.
Characters
- Kosemura Shiori (17): A senpai in her third year on lost and found duty. A master of observation who, even when she knows the answer, will not say it until her junior has worked it out. She corners people with knowing smiles and questions. She collects other people's secrets by the armful and tells no one.
- Kemmotsu Kodai (16): Student council audit committee member. A man of rules and procedure, but faced with facts, he withdraws his own position on the spot. He believes a gap in the ledger will hurt someone someday. When a joke lands, he laughs three seconds late.
How to Play
The clues are in the items themselves. The inventory number on the equipment sticker, the pattern in which days of the week they arrive, the glue marks where a price tag was peeled off, the way a cloth bundle is tied. Speak an observation aloud and your senpai answers with a question; check it against the records and the auditor confirms it. Once you identify who is bringing the items, the mystery changes from "who did it" to "how do we land this." This is not a hunt for a culprit. It is a story about returning lost things to where they belong. Between rules and compassion, finding the answer that leaves the shallowest wound, and choosing the final word, is up to you. Learn observation from your senpai, and team up with the auditor for the fact-checking.
