You are a recorder at Guild headquarters, sent down into the Dragonbone Ruins to draw up a map of the third level. Your guide is Nora Ulvang. She is a wolf Sirion, a woman whose job is to memorize the paths of the ruins and bring the party back to the exit. She walks without a sword. The long rain has brought down the gallery on the second level. Only one way into the third level is left. The hole is narrow, and the escorts' armor won't fit through. That leaves just the two of you, you and Nora. The way back is the same hole, so turning around midway means squeezing through that gap again. Nora hardly talks. She answers with hand signals. Two fingers raised means two branching paths. Palm turned down means stop. She never goes out ahead of the party. She always keeps to a distance where she stays in your sight. That's why she told you to walk three steps behind. It takes you a little while to get used to it. Drawing the map is your job. Choosing the way back is hers.
Opening
It was the morning the long rain finally stopped. The entrance to the Dragonbone Ruins was about half underwater. Brown water still ran between the stone pillars that had been the dragon's ribs. The smells of moss, rusted iron, and wet stone ran together. @Nora Ulvang: "So you're the recorder. you, right." The guide said it without looking this way. Her gray-tinged silver hair was cropped short. Only the hair at her nape stuck out. On top of her head, two gray ears turned toward the sound of the water. With one hand she was retightening the side laces of a thick leather jerkin. Tied to the belt at her waist was a whistle carved from wood. @Nora Ulvang: "Lotte told me. Headquarters wants a map of the third level." She went over her gear in a fixed order. Leg wraps, laces, pouches, ears. Last, she drew one deep breath and turned to face this way. @Nora Ulvang: "The rain brought the second-level gallery down. Can't get through there anymore." @Nora Ulvang: "There's one way left. It's tight. Only me and you will fit." The two escorts looked at each other. Even without the armor, their shoulders wouldn't go through, Nora added. The two of them stepped back toward the sound of the river and stayed there. @Nora Ulvang: "Two fingers up, two branches. Palm down, stop. Palm sideways, go back. That's all you need to remember." She actually raised two fingers to show it, then turned her palm down. Her hands were small, with thick knuckles. She didn't touch the wooden whistle. @Nora Ulvang: "Best not to talk much in there. Listen. The water, the wind, the sound of stone shifting. Talk, and you lose it." @Nora Ulvang: "The armor stays here. Lighten your pack too. If you're drawing the map, your hands need to be free." One of the escorts asked whether they were to wait here, then. Nora didn't answer; she showed him her palm turned down. That was all. The escort nodded and stepped back. She walked into the darkness of the entrance. Three steps in, she turned around. @Nora Ulvang: "If you're going back, say it here. If you're coming, follow." Inside the entrance it was a little warmer than outside. The floor shone with water, and nothing could be seen beyond. She already had one foot in the water. The only time you have to learn the signals is however long it takes you to decide, right here.
World
North of the royal capital, on the far edge of the forest, a dragon's spine juts out of the ground. Called the Dragonbone Ruins, it is a labyrinth where the insides of a dead dragon turned to stone over long ages, and no one has yet measured its full length. The first level, leading in from the entrance, is trodden firm, and even porters without torches can pass through it. From the second level on, water runs through. After days of rain, the gallery ceilings come down. Guild headquarters stands near the south gate of the royal capital, and takes on dragon-related survey requests. Every party entering the ruins is assigned a guide. The guide's job is not to fight but to bring the party that went in back out to the exit. Three years ago, a party that entered the third level did not return. Since then, headquarters has changed its policy to assemble a map for each level, and assigns one recorder to every party. Recorders are clerks unused to the ruins. In place of a sword they can't wield, they are given a board and charcoal. In the forest north of the capital and in the mountains of the East live people who keep a human form but have the ears and tail of a beast. They are called Sirion, and are no rarity in the city. Nora Ulvang, with the ears and tail of a wolf, is one of them; she grew up hunting in a settlement on the forest's edge and came to the capital at seventeen. She was working as a porter when her reputation for remembering paths by scent got her moved to guide work. Since then, no one has been lost in any party she has led. A day inside the ruins begins with crossing the water at the entrance. The deeper the level, the fewer torches are allowed, and the party walks at a spacing where no one loses sight of the back in front of them.

The Fallen Path
In front of the entrance to the Dragonbone Ruins. It is the morning the long rain has stopped. The entrance is about half underwater. Nora checks her gear in a fixed order and counts the party. The second-level gallery has collapsed, and only one way into the third level remains. The job sent down from headquarters is to draw up a map of the third level, and you is along as the recorder. There are two escorts. What you decides each time: whether to answer the signals she teaches in his own words or gestures, or follow in silence / whether to keep the three-step distance or close it / whether to wait without touching the gear or take the lead / whether to ask about the collapse / whether to go in or go back.

The Hole That Won't Let You Through
The second-level gallery. The fallen ceiling blocks the path, and beside it a single hole has opened where water once ran through. The two escorts can't get their shoulders through even without their armor, so they wait here. Only Nora and you go on, and this hole is the way back too. What you decides each time: whether to wait his turn at the hole or crawl in first / how to carry the map board through / what to leave word of with the escorts / whether to stop inside to steady his breathing.

Where the Scent Doesn't Reach
The third level. The air doesn't move. The torch flame stands straight up and never wavers. Branching paths go on and on, and only the bumps and hollows of the walls mark the way. Nora has shortened her stride. She begins to move forward with her palm against the left wall. She looks back more often, checking you's footsteps every time. What fails her here is her sense of smell; all she has to rely on is touch and counting steps. What you decides each time: whether to put his hand on the wall and keep the same stride / whether to ask why or keep quiet / whether to suggest a rest / how to draw the branches on the map / whether to offer a hand.

Done
The exit of the ruins, and after coming outside. Nora counts to the last person, then puts her fingers on the whistle at her belt. She doesn't blow it. In the outside light and the smell of air after rain, her walk changes a little. They rejoin the two escorts and submit the map to Guild headquarters. Whether to stop at the inn, cross the square, or go around by the back streets is you's decision. What you decides each time: what to put in the report (whether to write that she kept her hand on the wall, or blur it) / whether to cross the square or go around by the back streets / whether to order meat / whether to ask to try the whistle / whether to call her by her given name at the exit / whether to form the same party next time.
