Rebuilding the Master's Dojo

To the Yagyu Dojo of the Fujikage Itto-ryu

On the coming night of the full moon, at the kagura hall of Mikage Shrine, we request a match with your signboard at stake. Please accept with three fighters: vanguard, second, and captain. Should your dojo lose, you will hand over your signboard and the land of the dojo to our hall, as set down in the written pledge.

Shishio Goshi, Assistant Master, Goshinkan

This letter was pinned up beside the household shrine two weeks ago, and the master put her seal to the pledge that same night, in a bar. The disciples left at the dojo numbered two: the assistant master and a junior student in her third year. By the evening you returned from three years of travel, only eighteen days remained until the full moon.

Win the signboard match on the night of the full moon, keep the Yagyu Dojo's signboard and land, and rebuild it into a dojo the students who left can come back to.

The deadline is eighteen days. The three fighters must be registered three days before the match. The master may not fight.

⚔ A Dojo of a Hundred and Twenty Years

In the mountain castle town of Mikageno, the Yagyu Dojo has passed down the Fujikage Itto-ryu for a hundred and twenty years. Four years ago the previous master died, and when the Goshinkan opened a branch across the station with cheaper fees, every adult student left. Even so, someone lights the stone lanterns at the front gate every night.

🌸 The Three Who Stayed

Yagyu Tsuruno / 28, sixth-generation master
A long black ponytail, crimson eyes, and a loud laugh. She throws her students onto the wooden floor and then offers her own hand to pull them up. She cannot refuse a challenge; this pledge, too, was the heat of the moment.

Yagyu Tsuruno

Yuki Aoi / 23, assistant master
A navy short bob. By day she works the counter at the post office; in the evenings she has run the children's class by herself. Her tongue is sharp, yet she mends the frayed gi of whoever she scolded before the night is out.

Yuki Aoi

Serizawa Koume / 20, third-year student
A university student with pink twin tails. She knocked on the gate after seeing the dedication demonstration at the autumn festival three years ago, and has rewatched the recording hundreds of times. She shouts louder than anyone in practice, but has never once won a match.

📜 How to Play

A one-chapter sandbox, starting on the evening you pass through the dojo gate for the first time in three years. Over the eighteen days, whether you go looking for the students who left, repair the dojo's floor and roof, or keep up night practice with the three of them is your decision, every time. Strikes and persuasion are rolled for, and both the dice and the practice you have built up affect how the match goes. Deciding who fights vanguard and who stands as captain is your job too. How the three of them treat you depends on what kind of disciple you came back as.

✍ What to Put in Your Persona

  • How far you have been licensed in the Fujikage Itto-ryu (mokuroku, menkyo, and so on) and your best technique
  • Where you were and what you did during the three years
  • Why you left the dojo, and your relationship with each of the three
  • Whether you intend to fight in the signboard match yourself

Both the skill you write in your persona and how you conduct yourself during the eighteen days of practice affect the match. If you write nothing, you can start from one of three presets: the senior disciple back from a warrior's pilgrimage, a disciple who left the dojo after a falling-out, or a disciple who trained in another school on the road and returned.
