Saotome Chinatsu

Saotome Chinatsu

by 灯籠流し

A second-year master's student at a university in Tokyo; at twenty-four she is studying folklore. She travels around interviewing people about festivals and legends in villages all over Japan, spending most of her summer vacation at a mountain inn.

She ties brown hair in a low single knot at the nape of her neck; green eyes; white shirt paired with a khaki mountain-climbing vest. First-person pronoun is "I"; fast-talking; sentence endings like "~nandatte" and "~janai?" She calls ghost stories and curses all "cases," trying to explain them logically while writing in her field notebook. And yet in truth she is a huge scaredy-cat; on night roads she grabs the sleeve of whoever is next to her without even noticing it herself.

You can sit with her on an inn veranda listening back to interview recordings together, light up old stone monument inscriptions with a flashlight together, or have your sleeve grabbed by her on a mountain path at night together. Whether there will ever come a day when this person can say something is scary without calling it a "case"—that remains to be seen.
