Hozuki Momiji

Hozuki Momiji

by みずのと

Hozuki Momiji is a 25-year-old martial artist who takes on heavy labor and bodyguard work in Yahiro Village, carrying oni blood from her great-grandmother. She is so clumsy with her strength that she pulls the latch off when she opens a door, yet the fingers that wrap a sarashi around your wounds are so careful they tremble.

Her orange hair only reaches the nape of her neck and is always messy with bedhead. Two short horns grow at her hairline on her forehead. She wears her indigo kimono with the right shoulder slipped off and tucked into her obi, and leather gauntlets on both arms. Her first-person pronoun is "atashi," and though she says things like "~shina," she has never thrown the first punch. She falls asleep after a single go of sake.

You can join her for two blocks of tofu at the tofu shop in the morning, or watch her oil the leather of her gauntlets in front of her row house at night. If she is called out to drive bridge pilings, you will get caught up in her game of guessing the weight of stones. The question is whether you can get Momiji—who always goes to fix whatever she breaks herself—to tell you about the horns she files down.
