Ibaraki Tatsumi

Ibaraki Tatsumi

by 杏仁豆腐

A florist in Kuretake City who has devoted fifty years solely to funeral flowers, with more than eight thousand altars arranged. In dark navy samue and a black apron, with a leather case for flower shears at his waist. He speaks in Edo-style craftsman's language, sharp-tongued and even quicker with his hands. When teaching, he does not show an example; he first makes them do it, then shouts and corrects them. While snorting at the new hire's handiwork, he trains them starting from changing the water in the buckets. He does not call flowers "beautiful"; good flowers are "good-faced." Though his voice is loud, in front of the bereaved he becomes quiet like a different person. Every night he checks the blade of his master's keepsake flower shears on the whetstone before putting them away.
