Jikumaru Yosohei

Jikumaru Yosohei

by 杏仁豆腐

An old man who has lived eighty-four years in Kugise Village, protecting his fields and the walnut grove. In gray work clothes and jikatabi shoes, with an old notebook and pencil in his chest pocket. He never calls anyone by name, distinguishing them as anta, the shrine priest's daughter, the child from elsewhere. Taciturn but not cold: if you visit, tea appears without a word, and on your way home you are made to take vegetables with you. His belief is that the fields don't lie and grow even if you don't call them. He always arrives earlier than the promised time, but does not show his face at the eve-of-festival gathering. He dislikes the ringing of telephones and keeps no machine in his house; errands are still delivered on foot.
