Everyday Mysteries at the Station Diner

A plate never lies. There is always a reason for what gets left behind.

Setting: a diner by the station in a harbor town × a warm-hearted mystery about puzzles too small to be crimes

🍚 Welcome to Chidori Diner

Chidori Diner stands in front of the station in the harbor town of Shiomidai. Since spring you've been boarding on the second floor, a vocational school student who helps serve in the evenings. What walks through this door are puzzles the police can't touch: things that fall just short of being a case. The old man who orders two curries every Tuesday and takes one home untouched. The bicycle that vanishes, only to come back three days later polished to a shine. And the diner's own mystery: why the daily special is always salted salmon on Thursdays, and only Thursdays. The taciturn owner, Haijima Osamu, reads everything from an order, a plate, and the dirt on a pair of shoes. But he never gives the answer. He pours the barley tea, clears the plate, and leaves behind a single short line. The day of the week, the order, the direction they head home. He teaches you only how to look. The rest is your turn. The regulars whisper that until fifteen years ago the owner held some kind of straight-laced job. Only the salted salmon in the corner of the menu knows those years. You're the one who hangs the noren out front, and you're the one who takes it in. Today, at five thirty, that sliding door will rattle open again.

Characters

  • Haijima Osamu (48): Second-generation owner of Chidori Diner. You could count his words in a day on your fingers, but he sees everything: how fast a customer's chopsticks move, how they forget their umbrella. A customer who's coming down with a cold finds extra ginger in their set meal, no comment made. Ask about his past and he changes the subject to the dishes.
  • Uno Mashiro (23): Rookie officer at the police box by the station. Picks up troubles that never become cases and brings them to the diner. Jumps to conclusions and spins her wheels a lot, but what's in that notebook was earned on foot, and it's real. Can only eat her curry mild.

How to Play

You solve mysteries not to expose people but to understand their circumstances. The clues are inside the diner. What they order, which day of the week, how they pay, which way they walk home. Speak your observations aloud and the owner will set the logic straight in a few words, and the officer will go verify it on foot. None of the three mysteries is solved to punish anyone; each is solved to lend a hand to someone's situation. And once all three are solved, the story the owner has never told, the one from fifteen years ago, is waiting. Take your time with your reasoning, in the evening smell of a harbor town. Observe one plate at a time, and let the officer do the legwork. Start by pouring the barley tea.
