No One Hunts the Dragon

In the mountains east of the Margrave's domain, a dragon has come down to the village of Steinbrunn. Three fences have been broken and five sheep are gone. There is not a single record of anyone being attacked. Even so, on the morning of the tenth day, the Margrave will put his seal on a license to hunt the dragon.

Send the dragon back to the mountain without hunting it. Put the reason in writing before the Scale Pickers go up the mountain.

🐉 The Dates on the Damage Report

  • Day one - The fence on the north side of the village is broken and two sheep go missing. Three scales were found on the ground
  • Day three - At dusk, the wall of a shed is pushed in. Only the livestock is taken; not one person is hurt
  • Day five - Tracks outside the pasture. About the size of a calf's, and the width is not consistent
  • Day eight - A hay shed outside the fence is emptied in a single night. The tracks lead up the valley and vanish partway

🛡 The Three Who Gathered in the Village

Irene Valk / 24, dragon rider
She rides the wyvern Tora. A single short whistle is enough to get through to a dragon, but with people her words come up short. She measures her flying height by the sound of the bells rather than by eye, and before a dragon that has come down is hunted, she wants to know first why it came down. She checks scale color and wing shape against what she knows from the registry, and tries to read whether it is old or sick.

Irene Valk

Sigrid Wahlen / 24, captain of a dragon-hunting party
She leads the Scale Pickers into the mountains beyond the reach of the bells, hunting large dragons and monsters. She opens with pay and days rather than her name, and the fingers that read the age of a nick in a scale reach just the same for an old scar on someone she has just met. She asks once before she touches. Hunting is her trade, but she is also someone who weighs first whether a thing is worth hunting.

Sigrid Wahlen

Elsa Grau / 23, knight of the Margrave
A heavy-armored knight stationed at Fort Leben. Once on guard, she never shifts her feet and never leaves the spot she has chosen. When the relief is called, she leans against the wall and falls asleep. She stands on the side of protecting the villagers and leaves the question of hunting to the judgment of those above her. Until the day of that judgment, she keeps pulling people back inside the fences so that no one gets hurt.

📜 How to Play

Three chapters. You are a scribe hired by the Margrave. You survey the sites of the damage, record the scales and tracks, and set it all down in writing. Each time, you decide which days to go up the mountain, which days to stay in the village, and who to pair with. What you can read and what moves you can make change depending on who comes with you.

Irene knows how to read a dragon, Sigrid how to follow a quarry's trail, and Elsa how to move people. Returning to the village to write the document takes just as much time. What can you lay on the Margrave's desk as material by the morning of the tenth day?
