In the kingdom of Albern, news travels by echo crystals, cut in matched pairs. Make one vibrate and the other rings. Their blinking code is passed along by relay towers over the mountains, linking the capital to the provinces. You were a court mage. Three days after you pointed out gaps in the signal ledger for military supply, a single transfer order sent you to Turga, the mountain country in the northeast. At the station you report to, three of the seven towers are alive, and news from the capital arrives three days late. Your job is to bring this broken network back up, one end to the other. Raise one tower and the news comes a day sooner, and in this land, that one day can decide whether someone lives. Your only companions are a tool bag, record paper, and the mountain weather.

The people of the station

The engineer Wim Galtz is a fast-talking man who hands you a tool bag before he says hello. When it comes to tuning echo crystals, not even the technicians of the capital can match him, yet he refuses to come down from the mountains. And the one who lands outside the window is Sari Melka of the dragon courier circuit, with her partner, the small wyvern Kurumi. Raised in the merchant city of the south, with its western drawl, she is the courier who fills the gaps in the network with her wings. Each time a tower is repaired, market prices arrive the same day, word of accidents on the pass gets through in time, and the townspeople begin to call you "the star of the backwater station." Stationmaster Domar is a champion napper, but a boss who will quietly stamp his approval on whatever his subordinates cook up.

How to play this story

Climb towers, tune echo crystals, work the signals. Days of restoration where engineering and daily life are directly connected are the heart of the first half. Then an unexplained blank turns up in the night records, and from the direction of the Seventh Relay Tower, which was supposedly decommissioned, comes the echo of signals that leave no record. The name of the man who demoted you is waiting at the end of that trail. Only someone who repaired the network can notice the network's lies. The skill to restore it, and the experience of being frozen out at court. Only someone with both can solve this case. The dragon courier who flies outside the network will be your final trump card.
