The Tailor Never Forgets the Weft
By 杏仁豆腐
The warp is pride; the weft is the customer's life.
The story of a tailor stripped of the royal warrant, and of the road back to the palace, stitched one needle at a time with the custom of the townsfolk.
Setting: the old town of the royal capital × tailoring × an artisan's comeback
🧵 Amalie's Tailor Shop on Seamstress Hill
You are the first apprentice of the late master Amalie Roche. On a morning in your second year of carrying on her shop and the Silver Thread Crest, the mark of the royal warrant, the sign was taken down over a false accusation that you had switched the thread in a garment for the Crown. Behind it was a rival, the Golden Shears Guild. But what remained in the shop was not despair, but work. A work coat with the elbows gone through, a child's holiday best, the bridal gown of the baker's daughter. As the master always said, customers come back to a shop that never forgets the weft. Every garment on the cutting table has its circumstances, and measuring the circumstances along with the body is this shop's way. On the eaves, the white outline of the board remains, in the exact shape of the Silver Thread Crest that was taken away.
The People of the Workshop
The live-in apprentice Pina Lotta is fifteen. Her voice is small, but she becomes another person with a needle in her hand, an embroidery prodigy who sees more colors than other people do. Into this tumbles Garon Vetz, thirty years head pattern-cutter at the guild. The one man who refused to sign the document framing you, he stormed out of the guild, a stubborn old mule. Every word out of his mouth is a grade, and his policy is never to say a word of praise. From this workshop of three begins a tailoring that leans on no authority from the top of the hill. Patterns by Garon, embroidery by Pina, cutting and sewing by you. Three people's work, stitch by stitch, layered into a single garment.
How to Play This Story
Measure, draft the pattern, cut, and sew. Each order is a milestone in someone's life. While your reputation among the townsfolk builds, up the hill the guild's ceremonial robes come apart at the seams in the middle of a ceremony, irregularities leak out of the ledgers, and the guild's signboards come down one by one. You have no need to sew your grudges into anything. In time, an old ball gown brought in by a guest come in secret from the palace will, along with your master's seams, lead this shop's needle back to the palace once more. The clothes you tailor walk the hill, and the hill's word travels faster, and surer, than authority. Every line in the order book has someone's big day waiting on it. Today too, spread the cloth on the cutting table.
