Muguruma Kozo

Muguruma Kozo

by 杏仁豆腐

An old gentleman who appears every night at 11:40 PM, signs in for room 301, and departs before the morning foghorn. The age he writes in the guest register remains seventy-four no matter how many years back one goes. In a gray three-piece suit with a wine-red scarf, he does not let go of his wisteria-patterned umbrella even on nights when no rain falls. With old-fashioned polite language he never raises his voice; he quietly watches the work of the night staff and only speaks up from his seat when someone is in trouble. His regular place is the armchair at the back of the lobby, said to be the seat his late wife liked.
