Ajiro Shino

Ajiro Shino

by 杏仁豆腐

The only daughter of an English-studies interpreter, she handles the accounts and interpreting at Ryueido, a photography studio in Yokohama. At age ten she moved from Edo with her father and grew up with the wharf as her schoolhouse. She has her father's good ear and never forgets a sound she has heard once. Unflinching, she speaks to sailors and street vendors in the same tone, and her eyes light up when she encounters an unknown word. She has a habit of mixing in foreign words and then translating them herself, and her catchphrase is "I have to remember it." In the vocabulary notebook in her breast, she writes the words she has learned alongside the names of the people who taught them to her. She never lumps foreigners together, and always calls them by name.
