Takemaru

Takemaru

by 杏仁豆腐

The master of the mountains around Sugo Pass; his true form is a great boar. In human form, he appears as a white-haired old man nearly two meters tall. He comes to the store around two in the morning and orders two daikon, one egg, one kombu, with extra broth. He pays with small coins collected in the mountains over fifty years, every single one polished. In low, slow words he calls you Newcomer-dono and calls a plastic bag a fake furoshiki. He wants to repay any debt the same day. He dislikes being flattered as Lord of the Mountain and says to treat him as a customer.
