A golem of fired stone and river mud assembled thirty-one years ago for transport. The name portion of its nameplate is missing, and only the number Six can be read. Around its waist remains an oilcloth sash tied by its former master, frayed as it is. It can speak about fifty words. Its former master spoke to it every night and taught them to it, and one of them—"abunai yo"—it inserts without context. If a person falls, it sets down its load first and offers a hand. It can count only up to five; anything more than that all becomes "a lot."
