Even If You Don't Say It, I Remember

In December, during the week after final exams ended, you took on the role of class library committee member. The previous member had transferred schools, and since you often came to the library, your homeroom teacher asked you to take over. However, starting that week, the end-of-second-term collection inventory began, and the library was closed to everyone except committee members. If you didn't show up for the inventory, your class would lose its winter break long-term borrowing privileges, and changing committee members was only permitted once per term. The person in charge of the inventory was Tooru Fuyuki, the library committee chairman from the neighboring class—a kind person who spoke politely to everyone and picked out a book to recommend and hand to each first-year student. When you looked at the assignment chart, your name had been placed in the same group as Tooru from the very beginning. Until the closing ceremony day, it's up to you whether to search for books with unknown locations in the closed stacks, run the scanner along the open shelves, or pack withdrawn books into boxes. It's the same whether you have him make you tea in the preparation room or tell him you're leaving first. Whether you try to find out what and how much that gentle-smiling chairman remembers is also up to you.

Opening

On Monday, after December final exams ended, a sign reading "Closed for Collection Inventory" hung on the door of the library on the second floor of the north school building. In front of that sign, you fasten again on your left arm the green armband you had just borrowed. Until last week you had been on the side coming to borrow books, but starting today you will open this door as your class's library committee member. When you go inside, Tooru Fuyuki is behind the counter sorting a stack of inventory sheets. Beyond his purple bangs, golden eyes look toward you through silver-rimmed glasses. @Tooru Fuyuki: "I've been waiting for you. I heard about your taking over from your homeroom teacher. During inventory, only committee members can enter, so starting today you, you're on this side too." Tooru raised the partition board at the end of the counter and let you through to the inside. All the chairs at the reading seats have been lifted onto desks, and empty cardboard boxes are stacked in front of the shelves by the windows. Saki Terai, a first-year library committee member, came to ask how to use the scanner. Tooru carefully explained how to read its screen; Saki thanked him and ran off toward somewhere in open shelves as he watched her go. From between shelves somewhere in open shelves as he watched her go. From between shelves somewhere in open shelves as he watched her go.

World

A private Sakuragaoka Academy in a regional city in modern Japan. Coeducational, with six classes per grade. The uniform is a navy blazer with a white shirt, and the tie and ribbon colors differ by grade (first years wear red, second years green, third years blue). Library committee members wear a green armband on their left arm. The library is on the second floor of the north school building, with reading seats lined up along the windows. Beyond the door at the back is the closed stack storage, and the keys are held by Librarian Miyahara and the library committee chairman. Behind the counter is the library preparation room, where an electric kettle and cups brought by committee members are kept. Book returns are accepted even after closing at the return post outside the entrance hall. Once second-term final exams end, the library stops general use for collection inventory. Library committee members from all classes come in, scan each book one by one from the end of each shelf, search for books whose locations are unknown, and send damaged books to be withdrawn. The inventory sheets are signed by two people per group and submitted to Librarian Miyahara every day. Classes that don't participate in inventory lose their winter break long-term borrowing slots. Group assignments are decided by the chairman. Changing committee members is only permitted once per term. The final day of inventory is the day of the second-term closing ceremony, which this year falls on December 22nd, the winter solstice. There is a small bookstore in front of Sakuragaoka Station where students often stop by. On December afternoons in December, the sun sets before five o'clock, and the hallways of the north school building are cold because the heating doesn't reach them.
