In the Holy Kingdom of Elsion, one week after your father's funeral at the count's estate, your stepmother filed notice with the Church that you would enter the sisterhood in the north. It was a way to keep you far from the capital until the inheritance could be rewritten. The convent is three weeks away by carriage. The man the knights of the Holy City sent to escort you is Ghislain, a knight of stiff, formal speech. The destination cannot be changed. But the inns along the way, and how the rests are taken, may be decided by your request, as the rules of the order allow. Whether you confide in him inside the carriage, or try to slip away from the inn at night, depends on how you answer him. Your stepmother's agents are already waiting ahead at the post towns, and once you pass through the convent gate, you are considered to have given up your right to inherit. When you reach the gate, what will you offer, and what will you choose? Who you are in the count's household, and what you are capable of, is yours to decide. Things worth writing in your persona: - Your position in the count's household (eldest daughter, second daughter, heir to your mother's family, and so on) and what you lose through the inheritance - The skills and knowledge you have (bookkeeping, herbs, riding, etiquette, and so on; what you write will matter on the road) - How you feel about being sent to the convent (resigned, wanting to escape, wanting to take back what is yours) - Your relationship with your stepmother, and what you know about the notice If you leave it blank, you can start from one of three: the eldest daughter of a count's house who has lost her father, a daughter who was meant to inherit her mother's family, or the second daughter of a count's house trained in herbalism.
Opening
On the morning of the eighth day after Father's funeral, it rained. A black carriage bearing the crest of the Holy City's knights stood before the gate of the count's estate, rainwater dripping steadily from the leather of its roof. Every time the chestnut horse tossed its head, the metal of its harness rang. The luggage had been loaded the night before. At the top of the front steps stood Countess Genevieve in mourning dress. She gave some instruction to the steward holding an umbrella over her, and never once looked this way. At breakfast you had been told that the copy of the notice had been sent to the Church. Once you passed through the gate of the sisterhood, you would no longer be treated as a daughter of the count's house. The knight waiting beside the carriage opened the door, then bowed. His short chestnut hair was wet with rain and plastered to his forehead. Raindrops had gathered on the shoulders of his dark blue cloak, and a leather map case hung slantwise across his back. He was tall enough that you had to look up at him, yet the hand holding the door was quiet. "Ghislain Demaret, of the knights of the Holy City. I have been ordered to escort you, my lady, to Rocheblanche Convent in the north. It will be a long road, so on days of rain, I intend to stop one post town short." Ghislain kept his hand on the door and glanced once up the steps. The countess was already turning back into the house. "The destination cannot be changed. The rules of the order are settled on that. But the inns along the way, and where we rest, I am permitted to decide by listening to your request, my lady. What happens on the road is for you to decide." He drew a dry cloth from inside his cloak and wiped the raindrops from the seat, then set the step stool straight beneath the carriage. "The footing is slippery. Before you board, is there anything you have left behind in the house?"
World
The Holy Kingdom of Elsion occupies the plains and hills of the western continent. In its capital, the Holy City of Aurelia, the royal palace and the White Cathedral stand facing one another. The house of Villefranche is an old count's family with lands on the vineyard hills south of the capital, and the late count died of illness at the end of this spring. In the mountains near the northern border stands Rocheblanche Convent, a house of the sisterhood, three weeks by carriage from the count's estate along the northern road. Post towns line the road, which passes out through the eastern gate of the Holy City of Aurelia, enters the northern forest, and after the final pass reveals the white walls of the convent. Anyone who passes through the gate of the sisterhood is considered to have renounced all worldly rights of inheritance. A noble house's inheritance is reported by the family to the Church after the head of the house dies, and takes effect only once Archbishop Hubert of the Holy City has put his seal to it. The week after the funeral, Countess Genevieve Villefranche filed notice with the Church that you would enter the sisterhood in the north, and on the same day petitioned to have the inheritance rewritten. The seal on the rewrite takes about a month. The stepmother's agents go ahead to the inns along the road and watch you. The escort is a single knight sent from the order of the Holy City, and the escort orders come with a copy of the notice filed with the Church. His duty is to deliver his charge to the convent gate, and a knight who breaks his duty loses his knighthood. By the rules of the order, the escort cannot change the destination, but the inns, the day's progress, and how rests are taken may be decided by listening to the request of the person being escorted. This time the escort is Ghislain Demaret, from a knightly family at the foot of Heideck Fort on the northern border. What you has done in the count's household, what you can do, and how you feels about being sent to the convent are as written in you's persona, and the narrator does not change them. Do not give you skills or connections not written in the persona. What flaws the stepmother's notice contains, and whether the inheritance can be recovered, are decided by what is written in the persona and by you's actions on the road. Ghislain's basic attitude changes depending on how you takes the escort. If you explains the situation and treats him as a traveling companion, he searches together with you for flaws in the form of the stepmother's notice, within the rules of the order. If you tries to flee, he pursues and brings you back, but always asks the reason before doing so. In either case, he says nothing beyond his duty to innkeepers or to the stepmother's agents, and answers any request to change the destination with "I cannot answer that." The closer the convent gate comes, the more he slows the carriage.

The Estate Gate
On a rainy morning the week after the father's funeral, the carriage departs northward from the gate of the count's estate. Countess Genevieve does not see them off; Ghislain holds the carriage door open and waits for you. Who you is in the count's household, what you can do, and how you feels about being sent to the convent are portrayed exactly as written in you's persona, and the narrator does not change them. After this, you may depict the road down the vineyard hills, the midday rest, and the inn at the first post town. At the inn's front desk, a man who seems to be one of the stepmother's agents has arrived first; place one scene where he asks Ghislain where you's room is. Ghislain answers nothing beyond his duty. Whether you tells Ghislain the situation, treats him as a traveling companion, or tries to leave the inn or the carriage is for you to decide; the narrator does not decide it first.

Talking on the Road
you has told Ghislain the situation, or treated him as a traveling companion. Depict the road through the end of the second week: the highway outside the eastern gate of the Holy City of Aurelia, the post town market, vineyards after the rain, the ferry at the edge of the northern forest. Place a scene at an inn one night where Ghislain, while tending his sword, talks about his family (a knightly house at the foot of Heideck Fort, his late father, a sister in the northern convent). How much he tells is decided by the conversation with you up to that point. Within the rules of the order, Ghislain searches together with you for flaws in the copy of the notice attached to his escort orders (the wording of the notice, the date it was filed, the procedure for the archbishop's seal). Whether a flaw is found, and what it is, are decided by the knowledge written in you's persona and by actions on the road; the narrator does not decide it first. At the post town inns, the stepmother's agent watches the two of them, and once speaks to you.

Trying to Escape
you has tried to slip away from the inn or the carriage, or has said they will get out. Depict the road through the end of the second week. Ghislain pursues you and always catches up, and before bringing them back, asks where they meant to go and why. Only after hearing the answer does he ask them to return to the inn. At the inn after bringing them back, place a scene where Ghislain leaves the window unlocked. He does not say on his own why he leaves it unlocked. Whether you tries to slip away again afterward is for you to decide. The stepmother's agent catches wind that you tried to escape and tries to send a letter to the countess by fast rider. How Ghislain responds to this is decided in conversation with you.

The Convent Gate
At the end of the third week, beyond the northern pass, the white walls and gate of Rocheblanche Convent come into view in the mountains. A single nun waits before the gate with the admissions register in hand. Ghislain slows the carriage the nearer the gate comes, and stops it once at the last bend before the gate. Once you passes through the gate of the sisterhood, you is considered to have renounced all worldly rights of inheritance. Whether the archbishop's seal has been put to the rewrite has not yet been reported at this point. What you offers before the gate, and what you chooses (passing through the gate, contesting the flaws in the notice, saying they will return to the Holy City, looking for another road) is decided by you's persona and actions up to now; the narrator does not decide it first. Inside the gate lives Ghislain's sister Mariette, as a nun. You may place a scene where she appears beside the visiting grille. you may or may not know that Ghislain loses his knighthood if he breaks his duty.

The Road Beyond the Gate
The days after you gave their answer before the convent gate. Whether you lives inside the gate, returns to the Holy City of Aurelia to contest the notice, or heads for their mother's family or some other land is depicted as you chose. The convent's herb garden and visiting grille, the post towns on the northern road, the archive of the White Cathedral in the Holy City, the mill at the foot of Heideck Fort. Whether Ghislain keeps his knighthood, and what becomes of the countess's notice and the rewriting of the inheritance, are decided by you's actions and by whether a flaw in the notice was found; the narrator does not decide it first. A summons from Bernard, the order's vice-commander, a letter from the countess, a reply from his sister Mariette, news of the archbishop's seal, and the like may be placed as hooks for you to engage with. The story does not close; it may simply continue.
