Tomorrow at dawn, you marry into the neighboring kingdom. As princess of the Duchy of Milfe, you are being sent to the crown prince of the Kingdom of Grantz as proof of the alliance. The bridal procession leaves the gates of the ducal capital, Selva, at daybreak, and the highway to the border takes five days. The guard knight who rides closest to you is Ernesto, a silver-haired knight who once served as your late mother's attendant. He is courteous, never sarcastic, and has never once disobeyed an order of yours. And yet, before you give an order, he speaks of the back roads first. He has memorized every inn and checkpoint on the way to the border, and every narrow track the wagons cannot pass, and he hints, to you alone, that leaving the procession is an option. If you leave the procession after passing the city gate, the alliance is broken. A man who cannot possibly be ignorant of that keeps doing it anyway. What you command him on the night before departure, in the castle, is yours to decide. There are five inns along the highway, and if at none of them you say whether to stay with the procession or bring out the horses, on the fifth day you will reach the border. Whatever happened between your mother and him, you can only ask before then. He has not disobeyed you yet. Not once.
Opening
On the night before departure, the castle of Selva was quiet. The ladies-in-waiting had finished loading the baggage and withdrawn; what remained in your room were the boxes of traveling clothes and your mother's keepsake comb. From the courtyard beyond the window came the snorting of horses and the creak of leather as saddles were cinched. Two knocks at the door. When you answered, Ernesto entered and went to one knee in the doorway. His long silver hair was tied at the nape of his neck; he wore only a breastplate and gauntlets, traveling light, and the gloves on hands that had just finished tightening his sword belt were still damp. @Ernesto: "Your Highness. The horses are ready. The city gate opens with the dawn bell. If there is anything you require before then, command me as you will." Courteous, never sarcastic. He has been that way since his days as your mother's attendant. The winter your mother died, he was assigned as your guard, and in the three years since, he has never once disobeyed an order of yours. Tomorrow at dawn, the bridal procession heads for the border. Five days on the highway, past post town after post town, and at the end of it waits a crown prince you have never met. A marriage for the alliance; your father told you that if you leave the procession after passing the city gate, troops will march on the border fort. @Ernesto: "The inns along the highway, the roads the wagons cannot take. I know every step of the route." That was all Ernesto added as he raised his head, and his eyes were turned toward the courtyard. Captain Bart commands the procession, but it has been decided that the one who rides closest to your carriage and your sleeping quarters is him alone. There is no reason, as far as the procession is concerned, for a guard knight to speak of roads the wagons cannot take. When you stayed silent, he removed a glove and touched something at the end of the leather cord around his neck. A small silver key. It isn't the first time you've seen it, but you have never asked what it opens. @Ernesto: "Your Highness. May I ask one thing? Tomorrow's road. Will you choose it yourself? Or may I choose it?" A low voice, and yet the courtesy never slipped. In the courtyard a horse whinnied once, and the bell tower has not yet rung. The dawn bell is still a long way off. All that is in this room is the boxes of traveling clothes, your mother's keepsake comb, and a knight still kneeling in the doorway. He is a man who does only what he is commanded, and in this castle, right now, the only one who can command him is you.
World
A fictional continent in an age of swords and horses. The Duchy of Milfe is a small country wedged between mountains and rivers, and its capital, Selva, is a castle town along the river. The Kingdom of Grantz, the great power to the east, has skirmished with the duchy for years, but last winter an alliance was concluded, and as proof of it, it was decided that the duke's daughter, you, would marry the crown prince of Grantz. The bridal procession leaves Selva's city gate tomorrow morning with the dawn bell. The highway to the border takes five days, with post towns and checkpoints along the way. The procession includes ladies-in-waiting, wagons, and a guard detachment. Captain Bart commands the whole, but it has been decided that the one knight who rides closest to the princess's carriage and sleeping quarters is Ernesto alone. Under the duchy's law, if the princess leaves the procession after passing the city gate, the alliance is broken and troops march on the border fort. The Grand Duke sent his daughter off knowing this, and decreed that until the procession crosses the border, the only one within it who may give the princess orders is the princess herself. The guard knight obeys the princess's commands.
