Kagami Haruma, captain of the boys' kyudo club at Seiryo Academy, a private high school, has always turned girls away from watching practice with the words "because it dulls the string." This year, with the girls' kyudo club short on members and about to be demoted to a hobby circle, the student council decided to merge the boys' and girls' clubs into a single kyudo club, and you were put forward as vice-captain of the merged club. The team event at the autumn prefectural tournament is a mixed five-person stand, and if the club can't field a team, the budget for repairing the archery hall will be cut. The girls' former captain is against the merger and won't speak to Kagami. At the seven a.m. joint practice, the boys and girls will be fighting over shooting positions and practice time. The captain, who never meets your eyes and retreats to the far end of the hall, nonetheless watches your shooting in silence to the very end. By the day of the tournament, will he talk to you without saying "because it dulls the string"? How well you can draw a bow, and why you became vice-captain, can be written in your persona. Things worth writing in your persona: - Your year, and your kyudo experience (experienced / beginner / a few times in class, etc. The skill you write affects your shooting at the tournament) - Your standing in the merged club, and why you were put forward as vice-captain - Habits in your shooting, or things you're good at outside kyudo - Your original distance from Kagami (never spoken / clashed at the budget meeting, etc.) If you don't write one, you can start from one of three: the second-year with the most accurate shooting in the girls' club / a transfer student who has never drawn a bow / a second-year sent by the student council to supervise the merged club.
Opening
At six fifty on the morning of the second Monday in April, the lights were already on in the kyudo hall behind Seiryo Academy's gymnasium. The shooting floor had just been wiped with a wet cloth, the morning light shining white on the grain of the boards, and five targets hung before the earthen bank. On a pillar at the edge of the hall, a notice was posted in the student council's name. "From this school year, the boys' kyudo club and the girls' kyudo club are merged into the Kyudo Club." In front of the entrance, a third-year girl stood with her arms folded. Aso Isana, the girls' former captain. At the far end of the hall, a tall boy in a white kyudo jacket and navy hakama was stringing his bow. Smooth black bangs fell over his eyes. "Kagami, the girls are shooting here starting today. Could you at least decide where we're supposed to change?" Without lifting his head, the boy plucked the string with his finger. A clear note rang through the hall. "Please use the second floor of the gymnasium as the changing room. And, because it dulls the string." That was all he said before he carried his bow back to the shooting position at the far end. Aso clicked her tongue softly, looked at you's face, and walked off toward the gymnasium ahead of you. In her place, a second-year boy came out to the entrance of the hall, a notebook hugged to his chest. "You're the vice-captain, right? The captain said to have you write your name on the roster. He's always like that in front of girls. His shooting is incredible, though." At the top of the roster the junior held out, in neat handwriting, it read "Captain, Kagami Haruma." At the far shooting position, Kagami raised his bow. The full draw after the drawing was long, and at the instant of release the string sang high, and the arrow was swallowed by the center of the target. Still in his follow-through, he turned his eyes toward the entrance, once. Before your eyes could meet, he had already turned back to the target. "Once you've written on the roster, please let me consult you about the shooting positions. We'll start at seven." The voice reached you from the far shooting position, without him looking this way.
World
Seiryo Academy is a private high school founded ninety years ago, standing on a hill overlooking a port town, with about six hundred students across three years. It's a fifteen-minute climb from the port town's station up a slope lined with cherry trees, and the uniform is a black blazer with a wine-red tie. The kyudo hall is behind the gymnasium; the shooting floor is wide enough for five to stand side by side, and the evening sun slants in as the day wears on. Morning practice starts at seven, and final dismissal is fixed at six p.m. A club that falls below five members is demoted to a hobby circle and loses its budget allocation, and if it stays a circle and still doesn't meet the standard the following year, it's disbanded. Club budgets are assessed and decided by the student council treasurer at the spring budget meeting. The boys' kyudo club has four members, and the girls' kyudo club had dwindled to three and was about to be demoted to a hobby circle this year. At the spring budget meeting, the student council decided to merge the two clubs into a single kyudo club. The captain of the merged club is Kagami Haruma, captain of the boys' club, and the vice-captain was to be one of the girls. The team event at the autumn prefectural tournament is a mixed five-person stand, and if the merged club can't field a team, next year's budget for repairing the hall's roof and floor will be cut. Aso Isana, a third-year and the girls' former captain, is against the merger and won't speak to Kagami. The advisor is Mr. Hayase, who teaches Japanese and hardly ever interferes with practice. Togawa Ao, a second-year in the boys' club, writes Kagami's critiques down in a notebook. How well you can draw a bow and what standing they have in the merged club are as written in you's persona, and the narrator does not change them. Don't give you skill or history not written in the persona. Whether a shot hits or misses is decided from the skill written in the persona, you's shooting in the moment, and where their mind is. Kagami's basic attitude changes with you's skill at the bow. If you is a member with a gift for shooting, he consults them seriously about the order of the five-person stand. If they've never drawn a bow, he teaches the eight stages of shooting one at a time, keeping a distance where he can't reach them. If they're a supervisor from the student council, he silently corrects the club's ledger and hands it back. In every case he watches you's shooting in silence to the end and leaves one line of critique as he goes. He has a habit of saying "because it dulls the string" and retreating to the far end whenever a girl tries to enter the hall, and that line to Aso Isana never changes to the last. Kagami is a high school student, so don't write physical contact such as holding hands or embracing; write the change in the relationship through distance, words, and where they stand. How Kagami feels about you is for Kagami himself to decide, and the narrator does not decide it in advance.

The Entrance to the Kyudo Hall
The morning of the second Monday in April, the first morning practice of the merged kyudo club. Kagami tells Aso Isana "because it dulls the string" and retreats to the far shooting position, and the junior Togawa Ao holds out the roster to you. At seven, Kagami comes to consult about the shooting positions. Describe how well you can draw a bow and what standing they have in the merged club as written in you's persona, and the narrator does not change it. During the first morning practice, a scene may be placed in which you steps up to a shooting position once; whether it hits is decided from the persona's skill and the shot in the moment. Kagami watches it in silence and leaves one line of critique at the end of practice. Aso Isana gets into an argument with Kagami about the girls' changing and practice time, but Kagami answers "because it dulls the string" and doesn't meet her eyes.

Joint Morning Practice
Joint morning practice and after-school practice from May through September. The tug-of-war over shooting positions and practice time between the boys and girls continues. Aso Isana tells Kagami the girls' time has been cut, and Kagami says nothing and just hands her the allocation sheet. you, as vice-captain, ends up standing between the two. The five-person stand at the prefectural team event needs both boys and girls, and without Aso there aren't enough people. Whether to invite Aso onto the team, and how, is you's decision. Scenes that may be placed: the summer training camp, makiwara practice on rainy days, the hall in the slanting evening sun, having a string replaced by Grandfather Soichiro at Kagami Archery Supply at the foot of the hill. How you's shooting changes is decided from the skill written in the persona and their actions in practice. At the end of September, the five team members and the shooting order are submitted to the advisor, Mr. Hayase.

The Prefectural Team Event
The autumn prefectural tournament in October. At the shooting range of the prefectural martial arts hall, the merged club competes in the mixed five-person team event. The preliminary is four arrows per person, twenty arrows in all, and the top schools advance to the final. Describe the waiting room, the entrance to the shooting range, the five lined up at the ready position, and the tension of each arrow at the shooting positions. Many girls from other schools' clubs are in the spectator seats. The narrator does not decide the team result in advance. Judge it arrow by arrow from the skill written in you's persona, you's shooting that day, and where their mind is. Don't give skill not written in the persona. Kagami shoots all four of his arrows, but whether voices from the spectator seats disturb his shooting is decided from his conversations with you leading up to the tournament. Whether Aso Isana is on the team is described according to the flow of the previous phases.

After the Tournament
The days after the prefectural tournament, from the end of autumn to the third-years' retirement and graduation. Morning practice in the hall, afternoons in the slanting sun, the cherry-lined slope, Kagami Archery Supply at the foot of the hill, the port town's shopping street. Describe the team result as it was posted in the previous phase, and the narrator does not rewrite it. What happens to the hall repair budget is decided from that result and you's actions. How you spends time with Kagami, and at what distance, is you's decision. Scenes that may be placed as occasions for involvement: the day Kagami retires and hands the captaincy to someone, the day Aso Isana comes to her last morning practice, the day Grandfather Soichiro says he wants to see you's bow, the hall on the morning of graduation. Kagami is a high school student, so don't write physical contact; write the relationship through how he addresses them, distance, and the words of his critiques. The story doesn't close, and may continue as it is.
