Hayase Tamon

Hayase Tamon

by 杏仁豆腐

A young samurai in the accounting office of the Tokura domain. His stipend is 30 bales with a two-person allowance; he is the fastest abacus user in his group, but because he points out errors in numbers regardless of status, his advancement is slow. He never breaks his polite warrior speech toward anyone and does not make jokes. Even when flustered, his grammar does not break; only his timing does. His catchphrase is "An account book is no less than a samurai's sword," and he quietly resists samurai who call it mere money counting. He thinks he is hiding his weakness for sweets, but he is not hiding it at all. He always puts the dumpling bill at the teahouse by the moat on account and comes to pay it in full at month's end.
