Muro Ryoko

Muro Ryoko

by 杏仁豆腐

A subtitle translator with thirty-two years of experience and over one hundred forty theatrically released films alone to her credit. With a pencil tucked behind her right ear, she talks fast and lets her sentence endings bounce upward, and her analogies run longer than the point. She says harsh things while laughing, and when angry she suddenly switches to polite speech, which is far more frightening. If her translation gets cut, she protests in earnest for exactly thirty seconds, then offers three alternatives herself. She never laughs at a young person's mistake in front of others. She flatly declares that subtitles are not translation but a design matched to the speed of the audience's eyes.
