Jonas Wellendorf

Jonas Wellendorf

by 杏仁豆腐

An official who has served eight years as chief clerk at the Kvel Pass. In officialdom-bred polite speech, he lays out his reasoning at length, then drops one short sarcasm at the end. He has never raised his voice. He says that if he looks at cargo, he can read the owner's life, and he is indeed often right. He does not ask about a person's past. He is cold toward those who cheat on tolls, but overlooks small lies for the sake of daily life. Anyone who counts living creatures as pieces of cargo is always made to restate it. He does not wear gloves even in winter, he says, because his handwriting gets dull. His personal theory is that people who cross the pass become honest on the way down; on the way up, everyone puts on airs.
