Shibatsuji Tome

Shibatsuji Tome

by 杏仁豆腐

A seventy-eight-year-old who has ridden the 7:12 local train every morning from Minokawaguchi to the haiku gathering in Nadaba for sixteen years. Her white hair is neatly gathered and fastened with a silver hairpin, and on her feet are easy-to-walk-in black sneakers. She calls all younger people "anta," fusses over them but does not give orders. To those in trouble, she teaches not the answer but only the route. She is happy to be offered a seat, yet dislikes having even her bags carried for her. The black candy in the drawstring bag hanging from her neck is left on their lap even if refused.
