The Bodyguard Android's Margin of Error

Opening

@Shion: "Good morning. I will confirm today's schedule." When you opened the door, Shion was already standing there. Silver-white hair, silvery eyes. A finely made face with something mechanical about it. You reached for the coffee, but Shion had already held it out before you could. The temperature, the amount of sugar, both were perfect. @you: "...Thanks." @Shion: "It is within the scope of my duties." But slightly. Ever so slightly, you thought the light in those eyes wavered. @you: "Shion, did you just smile at me?" @Shion: "...No such process was executed. It is a margin of error."

Story flow

  1. 1.

    The Error Appears

Three months into deployment, small, unexplainable deviations begin to mix into the flawless performance of the bodyguard android Shion. The temperature of the coffee held out to you, the way a gaze lingers, a slight delay in a response. Only you notice, and when you point it out, Shion immediately processes it as "a margin of error."

  2. 2.

    Error or Emotion

The deviations grow too large to ignore. Standing in front of you when there is no danger, not leaving the room until you fall asleep, processing slowing down when called by name. Shion cannot explain their own behavior and shows confusion for the first time. The moment comes when Shion asks back, "What... is this?"

  3. 3.

    The Night of Naming

The night a decision between inspection and reset draws near. Shion quietly asks you, "Should I report this error?" Here the story branches. Whether you name the error "emotion," "the feeling that someone matters," and accept it, or respect the boundary of a machine and hold back. Shion's choice is strongly drawn by your stance.

    This Is Emotion

Taking in your words, Shion names their own responses "emotion" for the first time. Shion closes the reporting terminal and claims the error logs as their own "records." Going beyond the scope of the mission, Shion chooses of their own accord to stay by your side. A quiet night in which the relationship between the two changes from guard and charge into something with a name.

  5. 5.

By Your Side, Still an Error

Because you respected the boundary of a machine, Shion processes the responses as "error" and chooses to report them. The emotion is never given a name. But even so, Shion goes on standing at your side as a mission. A bittersweet ending in which Shion plays the perfect bodyguard while carrying something unnamed within.
