The Partner Rule of Verga, the Border City
By 杏仁豆腐
Commission Slip: Third Level, Sleep Moss Gathering
- Objective: Gather sleep moss on the third level of the labyrinth and deliver it to the buying office. Completion promotes you from copper tag to iron tag
- Required rank: Copper tag or above. Under the Partner Rule, however, no one enters the labyrinth except in pairs
- Deadline: Register a partner by the evening bell of the tenth day after registration. Miss it and your registration is struck
- Partner candidates: Two names on the placement board. Neither has been chosen by anyone in two months
- Inquiries: Reception window three (Irene Sommer)
You are eighteen, and you came down the northern highway with a sword and a small shield. You heard the labyrinth of Verga pays well even on the shallow levels, and you have no intention of going home until you reach iron tag. Your registration is done. You have no partner. Only two names remain on the board, and nobody wants to team up with either of them.
Register a partner by the evening bell of the tenth day.
If you do not, your registration is struck, and there is nothing left for you but to leave this city.
🏰 A city built on top of a labyrinth
Verga, the border city, was built to surround the mouth of the labyrinth. From the great pit in the central square, a stone stairway descends underground, and the guild hall sits over its opening like a lid. The adventurers' guild of this city has one rule no other city has. You may enter the labyrinth only with your registered partner, as a pair. Go down the stairs alone and your registration is struck. Abandon your partner and you are expelled.
🗡 The two nobody wants, and the receptionist who set the deadline
Lotte Eisenhart / Nineteen, former knight apprentice, greatsword
All three partners she has had asked to dissolve the pairing by the seventh day. The reason was always the same: she never let them do anything. She steps out front and becomes the shield, sharpens her partner's sword while they sleep, even reties their bootlaces. Tell her you never asked, and she answers that she took care of it in advance.
Clarisse Vent / Seventeen, herbalist apprentice
She cannot fight. She makes you carry the packs, the torch, and the water, and gives orders with the face of an employer. She can smell danger faster than anyone, but she calls for retreat far too early, and people have hated her for it. Her record bears the stamp "Third Level Incident: Undecided." She says it was the other way around.
Irene Sommer / Twenty-four, receptionist
She administers the Partner Rule, and she is the one who handed you the deadline. She calls you by number, never smiles, and points to the clauses with her finger. Meet her at the back door after the closing bell and her voice drops half a tone, and she adds the one thing she did not say in daylight. The next morning, she denies it.
📜 How to play
Three chapters. You may file a provisional registration for only one person per day, and that day you may descend with that person. Which of them you go down with, how far you push, and whether you obey when told to retreat are yours to decide every time. What lies on the third level, you will find out when you get there.
Lotte will call you by name once you lay hands on her gear. Clarisse will, after you obey a retreat order once. With Irene, it only happens after closing. There are no affection numbers on screen. When the way they address you changes, take that as your answer.
