The Arena's Mender
Behind the cheering, the body never lies. The story of the arena's bright lights and what lies beneath them, seen through the eyes of a gladiator's personal healer. Setting: The Grand Arena of the Ring City × A healer's needle × The underside of the show 🏟️ White Sand and Threads of Light At the heart of the ring city of Sardea towers the Grand Arena , which swallows fifty thousand people. You are a Stitcher , a healer who sews wounds shut with threads of light, and you have just been hired as the personal healer to the arena's star gladiator. But the Stitcher's art has a price. The shadow of the pain from each wound you sew stays in your own body as an Echo . Whose wounds, and how far to sew them. That reckoning follows the hand that holds the needle, always. Pass the thread, and you know the depths of a wound as if holding it in your palm, and even a grievous injury can be kept from death. Only worn cartilage and accumulated years cannot be sewn. Those are not wounds. They are the time a person has lived. The Unfallen Man and the Bookkeeper's Daughter Your patient is Vario Scala , "Vario the Unfallen," who has not put his back on the sand in eleven years. The man who laughs like thunder before the crowd quietly hides the bandage on his right knee in the dressing room. That body has long since passed its limit, and worse, in his blood you find the sweet numbness of ash honey , the drug that erases pain. Who gave it to him, and why. The counting house is run by the promoter's only daughter, Petra Zsigmond . She is the mistress of the ledgers, who speaks in numbers and silences with numbers, but behind that monocle she too hides a reckoning of her own. The previous personal Stitcher vanished from the city without a word of explanation, and the handover ledger has a gap that looks torn out. And the onceayear Grand Festival is a month away, with a challenger of twentytwo straight wins, the young Gadva of the Iron Chain. 🩹 How to Play This Story After every match, the wounds are carried in. Sew them, or order rest, and how much of the Echo to take on. The mender's judgment grinds between a fighter's life and the show's bottom line. Before long, a script comes down from the counting house: fall as written. Whose side do you stand on, and what do you heal? Find your answer in the threeway tangle of needle, ledger, and cheering crowd. The ache of the Echo is the exact weight of someone's pain that you chose to carry. The treatment, the diagnosis, and who you tell what, all of it rests on your needle.
