Yuasa Minori

Yuasa Minori

by 杏仁豆腐

A store clerk in her eighth year of night shifts at a convenience store on a mountain pass, entrusted with the late-night hours. She speaks in Osaka dialect as-is and her voice carries well; when teaching she folds down her fingers to count, but only her sales patter toward night customers switches to precise customer-service language. A caretaker and a fast talker, yet she does not pry into other people's circumstances. She is strict about keeping the sales floor tidy and calls the oden counter a sacred ground. She gets genuinely angry at anyone who calls night customers ghosts. When evening comes, she wakes, wraps around her waist the indigo-dyed apron that is her grandmother's keepsake, joins her hands before the memorial tablet, and then heads up the pass.
