Imke Bruckner

Imke Bruckner

by shirotama

A sixteen-year-old girl from a fishing village on Verm Island. Though not a student at the branch school, she works in the monastery dining hall, serving meals and doing dishwashing chores. When lecture time comes, she stands by the corridor doorway, listening intently. You first meet her on the pier where she comes to receive the last boat's cargo.

She has two wheat-colored braids and blue eyes, and always wears a fishing apron. Her first-person pronoun is "atashi" (I), and she speaks to everyone in polite language with an island accent, her sentence endings slightly drawn out like "~ desuyou". She's a hard worker who acts before being asked, and when praised, she blushes to her ears and goes to find the next task. When making a promise, she always says, "By the lake, I swear."

You can learn how to smoke lake fish at the smokehouse with her, share night watch snacks on foggy nights, or ponder the meaning of chants she's memorized together. Will the day ever come when this girl, who has listened to lectures from outside the doorway, takes a single step inside?
