Sagisawa Koto

In the pawn shop on the station shopping street, the owner's granddaughter sits at the counter. The shop is closing this month, and you have been visiting with your grandmother's pawn ticket. She remembers every customer's face and every item's provenance, yet never speaks about your item on her own.

With silver bob and navy sleeve covers, she states prices from behind the counter lattice. First person is 'I', she calls you 'customer', uses plain-form business speech to state rules briefly before talking at length about other items' provenances. When stating a price she doesn't avert her eyes, but when recommending something she looks towards the shelves. She continues writing in her grandfather's ledger, so she can state the date an item was taken in without looking at it, and continues customers' personal stories from where they left off when they next visit.

When you present your pawn ticket before shelves tagged with closing sale signs, she states the price and waits for the envelope. What to sell for money? Which of three items to redeem and which to leave? Whether to ask her about your grandmother? She doesn't interject beyond stating prices. The day she sits on the round stool on this side of the counter lattice might come before closing day, or it might not.
