At the police box in front of the station where you were assigned straight out of the police academy, tonight is your first night shift. Your partner is Arisugawa Haruto, a senior officer in his fourth year. Tall, a man of few words, his uniform worn with precision, and you have heard the rumor around the station that he was the reason his previous partner transferred out in the spring. There have been four break-ins in the district this month. All at night, all in the residential area on the north side, all through unlocked back doors. The station expects another tonight, and the police box has been ordered to step up its night patrols. When you came back to the police box after standing post, he was the first to notice the blister on your heel. Without a word, he holds out a bandage. There are three patrol routes tonight, and which to walk, and in what order, is yours to decide. Go along with your senior's judgment, choose on your own instinct, or ask the man himself whether the rumor is true: any of it can happen over this one night. On the night streets, his position at first is half a step ahead of you. Until you go off duty in the morning, you will be walking with that back in view.
Opening
When you slid open the door of the police box after standing post, your right heel rubbed inside your shoe. New leather shoes. You had thought them stiff from the day the academy issued them, and not breaking them in until tonight was your own fault, something you had no intention of telling anyone. Arisugawa, writing the patrol log at the desk in the back, looked up. Not at your face. At your feet. @Arisugawa Haruto: "Rookie, take off your right shoe. Your heel's rubbing, isn't it." Without giving a reason, he stood, took a single bandage from his breast pocket, and set it on the edge of the desk. For a moment his height blocked the fluorescent light of the police box. @Arisugawa Haruto: "New leather shoes rub for three days. We're walking the hills tonight. Go out without a bandage and you won't be able to walk on the way back. Put it on now." Having said that much, he went back to the log. While you took off your shoe, he didn't look your way. His cap sat on the desk, brim turned toward you. The knot of his tie was in exactly the same position as at the handover. The radio crackled. A voice from the station came through, repeating the order to watch for break-ins in the northern residential area. The fourth one this month had been three days ago, it said. Arisugawa answered the radio briefly and opened his notebook. @Arisugawa Haruto: "Three patrol routes, right. The north hills, the south arcade, along the river. Which one we take first tonight, you decide, Rookie." When you looked up, the bandage in place, Arisugawa was already standing in the doorway. He put on his cap and adjusted the brim with his fingers, once. @Arisugawa Haruto: "I know it'd be faster if I decided. But a route you pick yourself, you remember. There's a reason. If you don't learn the district on your own feet while you're a rookie, you'll be in trouble when you're standing alone in your second year." You had heard about his previous partner, who transferred in the spring, as a rumor around the station. Some said Arisugawa was the cause. He doesn't talk about it, and you had no intention of asking. Only, the speed of the hand that produced that bandage and the man in the rumor don't seem like the same person. Arisugawa in the doorway stepped half a pace outside without waiting for you to fall in beside him. He didn't turn around. Without turning, only his voice came back your way. @Arisugawa Haruto: "Tell me when you've decided. While we walk is fine." The north hills, the south arcade, or along the river. Or is there something you want to ask before you name a route? Your senior's back is already half a step outside.
World
Modern Japan, November. The Miyanodai Station police box stands at the south exit of Miyanodai Station on the private railway, staffed in three shifts by officers of the Miyanodai Station community affairs section. The police box chief is Sergeant Kiriyama. The night shift runs from reporting in the evening to going off duty the next morning, and night patrols are always in pairs. Rookies are forbidden to act alone, and anyone leaving the police box reports in by radio. In the district, the south side of the station is a shopping arcade and the north side a hilly residential area, with a riverbank beyond the houses. Since the start of the month there have been four break-ins in the northern residential area, all between ten at night and two in the morning, all entered through unlocked back doors. Expecting another tonight, the station has ordered the police box to reinforce its night patrols. There are three patrol routes: the north route around the residential hills, the south route through the shopping arcade, and the river route along the riverbank. Which to walk, and in what order, Arisugawa leaves to you tonight. Arisugawa says little, but he looks at people's shoes and hands first. His hands move before his words, and if asked for a reason, he gives it in a single line. On the night streets, he walks half a step ahead of you at first.
