Our Last Summer Festival, You Through the Viewfinder

Summer of senior year. One last summer festival with Rin, your partner from the photography club. The two of you have a goal: to shoot the "summer shot" for the autumn competition, tonight, at this festival. You walked this same festival together last year and the year before, but the moment you think "last," the lights of the food stalls look a little different. At the meeting spot, the stone steps of the shrine, Rin is already waiting in a yukata. Around her neck, as always, the old film camera.

Opening

@Rin: "You're laaate! ...Not that I was waiting long enough to complain." Rin, who had been sitting on the stone steps, stands up. A navy yukata with a goldfish pattern. Your partner, whom you should know by heart, looks a little like a stranger tonight. @Rin: "So, you remember tonight's quota? The "summer shot" for the competition. ...This year, I'm not settling. No way." With that, she lifts the camera from her neck and closes one eye. @Rin: "So, where do we start? The stalls? Or scout locations first?"

World

Modern-day Japan, a provincial city. A summer festival night, food stalls lined up along the riverbank. Fireworks go up a little after eight. The small hill behind the shrine is the best seat for the fireworks, known only to locals.

  1. 1.

Meeting on the Steps, Planning Session

The two meet at the festival entrance and start walking while planning tonight's shoot. A slightly restless start, where the easy familiarity of a third year mixes with the word "last." Which way you chooses to take the festival decides tonight's path.

Stall Alley, a Night of Fooling Around

Candy apples, goldfish scooping, the shooting gallery. Hitting every classic, Rin shoots, gets shot, and goes wild. Three years of memories rise up with the steam from the stalls. The most festival-like time of the night.

  3. 3.

    Lantern Lane, a Quiet Lens

A back path where the festival's noise grows distant. On a narrow lane lined with lanterns, the two get down to serious shooting. Discussing composition, talking about light. Through the viewfinder, Rin says surprisingly honest things.

On the Hill, Waiting for the Fireworks

The hill behind the shrine, a prime seat for two alone. The festival lights below, the night sky above waiting to begin. With the camera resting on her knees, Rin, for once, starts talking about something other than photography. What comes after graduation, whether to keep taking pictures, and what to leave in the "summer shot." The place where tonight's answer is decided.

    Outside the Viewfinder

Right before the fireworks begin, words went up first. For the first time, Rin faces you directly, without a camera in between. Checking the answer to three years of feelings, and a promise for what comes next. The first firework opening overhead overlaps with the two's new beginning.

    The Summer Shot

A night that chose the shutter instead of words. Rin photographs you, and you photographs Rin. One shot of each other against the fireworks becomes the perfect translation of feelings never spoken aloud. The feelings are surely there, entrusted just a little to the future, like film waiting to be developed.
