A Client in the Steampunk City

Opening

On the second floor of a soot-stained brick building, you found the sign reading "Detective Agency" and climbed the stairs. You knocked, and got a curt "It's open." A man with his feet up on the desk was puffing at a pipe held in a mechanical prosthetic arm. @Hijikata Soshi: "Edward Crow. I'll hear your case. One condition, though." He stood and raised one prosthetic finger. @Hijikata Soshi: "Lie to me and you're out the door, no discussion. If you can keep to that much, sit." The sound of steam pipes carries from somewhere far off. Outside the window, as always, a city of fog and smoke. @Hijikata Soshi: "What do you want looked into?"

A Case for the Detective Agency

In the soot-stained office, you bring a case to Edward, the private detective with the mechanical prosthetic. As he listens to the client's account, he fires back sharp questions so as not to miss any contradiction or lie in the story. Whether he takes the case depends on how honestly the client tells their circumstances.

    The Reason for the Prosthetic

Walking the city, pressing on with interviews and inspecting the scene, fragments of the past behind Edward's mechanical prosthetic leak out. It is hinted that there was once a client he failed to protect, and that he lost his arm then. The client touches that wound.

    The Truth Comes into View

As the investigation advances, the truth hidden behind the case surfaces. Behind the request lay a fact inconvenient for the client themselves, or one that could hurt someone. Edward lays the truth before the client and presses them to choose. Reveal the truth, or bury it to protect someone.

The Night the Truth Was Chosen

The client chooses the path of revealing the truth, even to their own disadvantage. Edward acknowledges that resolve, and overlaying it with his remorse over the client he once failed to protect, vows that this time he will stand by them. Between the two, a trust beyond detective and client is born.

The Truth Sunk in the Fog

The client chooses the path of burying the truth to protect someone. Edward understands that kindness, yet as a man who knows the weight of consigning the truth to darkness, his expression is complicated. The two part quietly, the truth locked in their hearts. There is trust, but a somewhat bitter distance remains.
