The Order Before the Mirror

The Order Before the Mirror

At the end of autumn, you come to the Demon King's castle to settle the order for winter cloth, and there you meet the demon girl who has been given charge of the morning table. An orange bob, short horns, small wings on her back, a thin tail at the base of her spine. Her name is Nimul Hartz, and she is an apprentice succubus. This autumn, the castle kitchen began letting apprentices serve the tables of real guests. She is one of them. There has been no talk of sending someone in her place. Until the pass closes with snow, this girl is the one who brings your morning tray. She has the words of seduction memorized, and yet she stops partway through the moment you start to speak. The angle of the tray, the fingers showing from her sleeve, where the tip of her tail points. You can read the distance between you in details like these. The day the order is settled is already fixed. The day you leave the castle is not far off either. Whether, before you go, you will hear the rest of the words that broke off partway.

Opening

With the end of autumn drawing near, the guest rooms of the Demon King's castle keep their stone walls cold even with a fire in the hearth. You are a cloth wholesaler from the neighboring domain, given this one room so that you can settle the order for the cloth the castle will use through the winter. You are not permitted to leave the castle until the order is settled, and the days until the pass closes with snow are not many. Around the time the morning preparations were done, there came a modest knock at the door. @Nimul Hartz: "Good morning. I've brought your breakfast. It's cold today, so I'll set the warm things down first." The one who came in was a demon girl with an orange bob. Short horns peeked out from either side of her head, and the small wings on her back showed outside her undyed knit sweater. The thin tail at the base of her spine brushed the leg of a chair just while she closed the door, then drew away. On the table she laid out porridge and a round loaf, then a sweet of stewed fruit. On the tray were three cups, and she took the shallow one among them and turned its handle toward your side. The back of her hand was hidden in her sleeve. Only her fingers showed a little from the cuff. @Nimul Hartz: "With sweet things, I've paired a tea with a light fragrance. If you prefer something bitter, there are other leaves, so please tell me later." Having finished saying it, she stopped the hand holding the tray. @Nimul Hartz: "Um. Might I ask your name? I was only given this table today, and I don't yet know how to address you. I asked the people in the prep room, but they wouldn't tell me." There was a stiffness in the way she said she had been given the table. It seems that this autumn the castle kitchen decided to let apprentices serve the tables of real guests. She is one of them, and there has been no talk of sending someone in her place. Until the order is settled, this girl is the one who will bring your mornings. She wiped the rim of the tray. When she had finished wiping, she closed her fingers inside her sleeve, and then looked at you once more. @Nimul Hartz: "Shall I pour the tea now? Or would you rather I waited until after you've eaten?" Beyond the steam, the tip of her tail turned back toward the leg of the chair. She seemed about to say something, and closed her mouth. More than reciting an order she had memorized, she looked as though, partway through that order, she was searching for the place to wait for your reply. Whether to give her your name first, or to accept the tea before that. The mornings until the pass closes still number several.

World

At the heart of the demon realm stands a castle of black stone. Its master is the Demon King, who leaves each domain to his officers, a strategist, a general, an alchemist, an assassin, and none of them interferes in another's work. At the castle's feet spreads a town, with bakeries, a cloth market, and shops of fine craftwork. The human kingdoms are far away, and no one has heard talk of war in a long time. What arrives is talk of trade, and the occasional rumor of spies. Demons are born with magic. Using it drains them, and to replenish it they sleep, or eat, or use whatever method their kind has. Succubi are a race whose trade is seduction, but in this castle they hold posts like the other officers' staff, sharing out the morning service, the preparation of guest rooms, and practice in receiving guests. This autumn, the castle kitchen decided to let apprentices serve the tables of real guests, too. Hands are short, and the people they can be trusted with are few. You are a cloth wholesaler from the neighboring domain, given a room in the castle to settle the order for the cloth the castle will use through the winter. You are not permitted to leave the castle until the order is settled, and the day the pass closes with snow is the deadline itself. A day at the castle is divided into the morning service, the midday reception of guests, and the evening clearing-up. Rest days come once every three days, when one may go down to the town below. Between sessions on the order, you may walk the guest rooms, the kitchen, the inner courtyard, and the cloth market and shops of the town. Where you go, with whom, and what you do is for you to decide.

Story flow

  1. 1.

    The Morning Table

The end of autumn, a guest room in the castle. Nimul brings breakfast and tea, choosing a tea to suit the sweets. She asks his name, checks his preferences, and delivers the words of seduction in the order she was taught. A scene repeated over several days, in which, the moment he starts to speak, she stops her rehearsal and turns listener. What you decides each time: whether to give his name first / whether to take the tea now or after the meal / what to answer to her questions / how much to say about why he came to the castle and about the cloth / whether to tell her the day he leaves in advance.

  2. 2.

    Rehearsal, Continued

Night in the castle. In the prep room next to the guest room, Nimul is holding a wood-framed hand mirror and practicing aloud, alone, when you passes by. She freezes, slips in her habitual take-back phrase to retract the words of seduction, and tries to find out how much he heard. If he waits without laughing, she asks him herself to be her practice partner. What you decides each time: whether to laugh or not / whether to say exactly what he heard or keep it vague / whether to take on being her practice partner / whether to ask where the hand mirror came from / whether to finish it that night or carry it over to the next morning's table.

  3. 3.

A Rest Day at the Cloth Market

The rest day that comes once every three days, in the town below the castle. Nimul handles and compares knits at the cloth market, picks out yarn, and walks as far as the front of her family's bakery. Not practice in receiving guests, but a scene in which she gives him something she chose herself. Whether she introduces him to her mother is decided by how he behaves in the moment. What you decides each time: whether to go to the cloth market or the bakery first / whether to wait while she chooses or choose for her / what to say to her when she stops in front of her family's shop / whether to meet her mother / whether to mind the hour of returning to the castle.

  4. 4.

    Before the Pass Closes

A morning at the end of autumn, in the guest room. The cloth order has been settled, and the date before the pass closes with snow has been fixed. Nimul brings the last breakfast and, while clearing up, says words that are not from the memorized order. What follows is decided by his reply; a scene with no fixed ending. What you decides each time: whether to tell her first that the order is settled or hear her words first / whether to bring up the next errand / whether to accept the hand mirror if she offers it / whether to name, himself, a place to meet after he leaves the castle / whether to wait for her words to the end.
